Building My Dream Home (#1) Facade

First of all, I am honoured to get the opportunity to contribute to Scandinavian Chic. I have followed Dagny’s blog from the early morning and I’m thrilled about the development.

Every Tuesday I will involve you in my house-building project and I am so excited! I hope you will enjoy the ride and don`t hesitate to get involved. I would love to hear your views. Maybe your contribution will open my eyes to new and exiting solutions. You know, you can make THE difference and I will make sure you get the credit.

What’s fun with this building project, compared to our previous renovations, is that we´re going to re-vamp the facade and give it a total makeover. Here are some buildings that really inspire me:

This is Akershus Fortress and is one of the most impressive Castles in Norway of that period. The construction of the castle started around 1290s. It’s located in Oslo and has a stunning view over the Oslo fjord. And in the summertime, you can enjoy your lunch in the garden and let the surroundings seduce you.

From Akerhus Fortress you can view the Nobel Peace Centre. Another lovely building that inspires me. So, how can I use these buildings as a source of reference?

Lets get down to earth. My house will never be as stunning. It will look more like a simple dollhouse compared to these, but there are some elements that I will draw up on and I am not afraid of big and hairy goals ;-) First of all, I love the simple layout, the use of stone and concrete walls (the majority of houses in Norway is made of wood), the charming windows, the airy feeling inside, and how these buildings fit their surroundings so perfectly.

So my question: What do YOU think makes a house stunning?

Our new house really needs some love and attention. It actually needs ALL the care it can get:

The house was built in late 1970's. A decade I don`t favor much, but at the same time it is quite easy to make it look better. The reason why we bought this house was because of the location (it's only 15 minutes outside Oslo's city centre) and it has a big garden for my kids.

Now we are reconstructing the facade and this is the result so far:

What do you think? What are your immediate thoughts? (We have not decided what kind of windows we want. I just know they’ll be big, but different.)

... next Tuesday I will invite you inside the house and I will also show you the facade more in depth. Hopefully we will come up with some great solutions together. Stay tuned!

xoxo

Dette blir bra. Hva med buede vinduer i fronten? Det blir passe castle, eller hva?

Jeg har bare ett buet vindu, men til gjengjeld er jeg veldig glad i det!

I LIke it!! Synes det er spennende at vinduene ser ut som om de er uten rammer! Har du tenkt på sorte sprosser/kanter? Synes jeg husker du gjorde et innlegg på det... ;)

I love the transformation. This is always much fun to see something getting so much better.
How about the house color? Is it supposed to be white? Are there traditional colors which you could incorporate? I love the large windows in the front addition. Glorious! The more light the better!
Would love to come along to see the future of your home!

Can't wait to see how this looks "in the flesh" - just by the pics, I am sure it's going to be stunning!

Victoria - Thank you for your feedback! I totally agree with you. It is extra fun to work with a house like this. We thought about using white lime painting, on the concrete, as the houses around are white, but do you have other suggestions? I would love to hear ;-) We have not concluded yet, but we thought of dark grey windows... Looking forward to hearing from you again.

Thank you, JulieB! I really hope it`s going to be as great as I have pictured it inside my head ;-) You are welcome to help me out making exciting decisions along the way.
