When I was 13 years old I designed my first house. It was round like a tower and I was really obsessed with the idea, - using hours and days to make it perfect. 7 years later I was dining with my older brother and he told me, totally accidentally, that he dreamt about building a round house. How is that possible? We had not spoken to each other for ages and he just popped out with my secret dream.

15 years later, after I had drawn my first house, and 8 years after my brother and I discovered our common dream, I got to know an amazing man. An engineer in his 50`s. One of my best friends to day. He had designed and built his own house and it was actually ROUND. What a coincident? Am I surrounded by round-house-dreaming people? ... and don`t tell me your dream house is round as well? I`m actually afraid of asking, BUT I need to know ;-)

As you may understand by now, I have dreamt of my dream house for years, clipping photos and articles from magazines, imagined, and designed each room. Even though it`s not going to be a round one this time, I`m prepared. I know what I want and I think I`m pretty close.
In my opinion, the floor plan can make or break THE dream. Floor planning has a tremendous effect on how you use your home. - If you will prosper or not. I therefore always use a lot of time finding solutions that utilize the opportunities at place, so the total gets bigger than each single room in a way.
The reason why I want to show you my floor plan, is to give you an idea of how I want this house to work. (The drawings are still in progress). Take a look:
The picture above shows you the main floor (2. floor). Each room will be bigger than earlier and the floor is divided into two zones, one private and one social. The private zone includes three bedrooms, one bathroom, and one play corner, while the social zone includes the kitchen, and the living room. Two big folding doors (not included in the drawing) will make access to the main porch, making the kitchen and living room totally open. Thank you Mona at Norwegian moods for this great solution!
The new big kitchen is moved out in the new building. Behind the kitchen I will make a play corner for the children. - The play corner might be bigger. I haven`t decided yet. And when the children gets older, the room will be used as a walk-in closet.
The master bedroom will have direct access to the second porch (the one on the right side), which also can be entered from the kitchen. This bedroom might be a second living room in the future, when the girls gets older.
The first floor (or the ground floor) includes an apartment (that we`re going to rent out), the main entrance, one guest room, bathroom, walk-in closet, staircase, different preservation rooms, and a laundry room. I especially like the the walk-in closet solution with direct access to the laundry room. I also like the big guest room. It has its own bathroom and the location makes it private, if my guests would like to retreat without being disturbed. - When we don`t have guests, we will use it as a home office. At last, the rental. To make the apartment more private, the entrance is moved from the front to the right side, just like the bedroom, and the windows in the front will be "blinded". That means, you will be able to look out but not in ;-)
So my question: What kind of (floor planning) solution(s) will YOU make sure to incorporate/or not in your next home?
Enough talking, my upcoming features will be full of inspirational pictures. Trying to find solutions for one room at the time, I hope to involve you in my decision-making. Stay tuned! ;-)
